What Is LG QNED TV Technology?

LG QNED is a family of LCD televisions designed to enhance colour reproduction, brightness and picture detail. Depending on the model and generation, QNED technology combines LG’s NanoCell colour technology with Quantum Dot technology or LG’s newer Dynamic QNED Colour solution.

These technologies are designed to reproduce rich, lifelike colours while supporting detailed images across a range of content.

Selected LG QNED models also use Mini LED backlighting and local dimming to improve control over brightness and contrast. Other features, such as AI picture processing, HDR formats and gaming enhancements, vary according to the TV series.

The combination of display technology, picture processing and smart TV features makes LG QNED a versatile option for everyday entertainment.

Key Features and Benefits of LG QNED TVs

1. Rich and Vivid Colours

Colour quality plays an important role in making films, sports and games look realistic. LG QNED technology is designed to reproduce a broad range of colours, helping images appear vibrant and detailed.

Depending on the model, LG’s colour technologies can help maintain colour richness across different brightness levels. Selected series advertise 100% colour volume, with certification based on specified testing conditions.

The exact colour technology and performance claims depend on the QNED generation and model.

2. Mini LED Backlighting for Enhanced Contrast

Selected LG QNED TVs use Mini LED backlighting. Mini LEDs are smaller than conventional LED backlights, allowing more light sources to be placed behind the LCD panel.

This supports more precise control over screen brightness and can improve contrast between bright highlights and darker areas of an image.

Benefits of Mini LED technology on compatible models may include:

Brighter highlights in supported content.
More detailed dark scenes.
Improved control of backlight zones.
Greater contrast in films, games and other visual content.

Not every LG QNED television uses Mini LED backlighting. Check the specifications of the exact model before choosing a TV.

3. Precision Dimming for Better Light Control

Local dimming technology adjusts the backlight in different areas of the screen. By controlling these areas independently, compatible TVs can display bright objects against darker backgrounds with improved contrast.

LG offers different dimming technologies across its QNED range, including Precision Dimming and more advanced variants on selected models.

The number of dimming zones and the level of precision vary by series and screen size. The effect on picture quality also depends on the content being displayed.

4. High Dynamic Range for More Detailed Images

High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology expands the range of brightness and colour that a compatible TV can display.

Selected LG QNED TVs support HDR formats and picture-enhancement technologies such as Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10 Pro. These technologies are designed to improve the presentation of supported content by enhancing highlights, shadows and colour detail.

Dolby Vision IQ, on compatible models, can use content metadata and the TV’s ambient-light sensing capabilities to help adjust the picture to the viewing environment.

HDR formats and enhancement features vary by model. To enjoy their benefits, the TV and the content being watched must support the relevant format.

5. AI Picture Processing

Selected LG QNED evo AI televisions use an α (Alpha) AI processor to help analyse and optimise picture quality.

Depending on the processor generation and model, picture-processing features may include:

AI Super Upscaling: Enhances lower-resolution content for viewing on a 4K screen.
Dynamic Tone Mapping: Adjusts brightness and contrast to improve the presentation of compatible content.
AI Picture Pro: Applies picture-processing techniques to help improve detail and visual clarity.
Scene optimisation: Helps adjust image processing according to the content being displayed.

Results depend on the original source quality, the processor and the features supported by the particular TV.

6. Smooth Gaming Performance

LG QNED TVs can also be a good option for gaming, especially selected models with higher refresh rates and gaming-focused features.

Depending on the series, supported features may include:

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) to help synchronise the display with compatible gaming hardware.
AMD FreeSync Premium on selected models.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) to help reduce input lag.
High-refresh-rate 4K gaming on compatible models.
Game Optimizer and Game Dashboard for convenient access to gaming settings.
HDMI 2.1 features on supported models.

These technologies are designed to help reduce screen tearing, improve responsiveness and provide smoother gameplay. The refresh rate, supported resolution and gaming functions vary by model. Compatible consoles or PCs, suitable connections and supported game settings may also be required.

7. FILMMAKER MODE™ for a More Authentic Movie Experience

Selected LG QNED TVs support FILMMAKER MODE™, which is designed to preserve a film’s intended picture presentation.

When enabled, it disables certain motion-processing effects and aims to retain the original aspect ratio, colour characteristics and frame rate of compatible content.

This can be useful for viewers who prefer a movie presentation closer to the filmmaker’s intended look.

8. Immersive Sound with Dolby Atmos

Selected LG QNED models support Dolby Atmos, a sound technology designed to create a more immersive audio experience with compatible content and equipment.

Sound quality also depends on the TV’s built-in speakers, the content and the room. For a more cinematic audio setup, consider pairing a compatible LG TV with a suitable soundbar.

Dolby Atmos support and other audio features are model-specific.

9. Smart TV Entertainment with webOS

LG Smart TVs use webOS to provide access to compatible streaming services, apps and connected entertainment features.

Depending on the model and region, supported services may include Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+. App availability and content libraries can change, and some streaming services require separate paid subscriptions.

Selected newer LG TVs also support additional connectivity and smart features. Check the specifications for the exact model to confirm the operating system version, supported apps and available functions.

LG QNED vs LG QNED evo AI TVs

LG QNED and QNED evo AI refer to related TV families, but their specifications and available technologies can differ by generation.

LG QNED TVs focus on enhanced colour reproduction and LCD picture performance. Selected models include Mini LED backlighting, local dimming, HDR and gaming features.

LG QNED evo AI TVs include newer technologies on compatible models, such as updated Alpha AI processors, Dynamic QNED Colour Pro, AI picture enhancements and advanced gaming features.

The QNED evo range is not identical across every model year. Compare the screen size, display technology, processor, refresh rate, HDR support and smart functions when choosing a television.

How to Choose the Right LG QNED TV

Before selecting an LG QNED television, consider the following factors.

Screen size: Choose a size that suits your room, viewing distance and furniture arrangement.
Resolution: A 4K TV offers detailed picture quality for compatible 4K content. Check the exact model’s resolution.
Display technology: If contrast and bright highlights are priorities, look for a model with Mini LED backlighting and an appropriate local-dimming system.
Picture processing: Compare the Alpha AI processor generation and supported picture-enhancement features.
Gaming performance: Check the native refresh rate, VRR range, ALLM, HDMI connectivity and compatibility with your console or PC.
HDR support: Confirm which HDR formats are supported if you regularly watch compatible films and streaming content.
Smart TV features: Review webOS, app availability and any additional connectivity functions you need.
Audio: Compare built-in sound capabilities and consider a compatible soundbar if you want a more immersive experience.

Not all features are available on every QNED TV, so use the exact model specifications as the final reference.
